The 97 CVYSA Blast Blue Girls and Boys teams won the U12 Divisions of the Bloomin Ice Breakers tournament in Gastonia May 15 and 16. The girls initially lost to WCWAA FC Alliance 4 to 3 in their opening game but then went on to win their games against HCSA Red 2 to 0 and against LNSC Lady Blue 2 to 1 before beating the WCWAA FC Alliance in a rematch 5 to 0 for the championship. The team is coached by Chris Nelson.
The CVYSA 97 Blast Blue Boys capped off their undefeated season with a championship win at the Icebreaker Cup. The team outscored their first three opponents 12-2. In the championship game, they faced the home team, Gaston United Soccer Club. Oscar Betancourt scored the only goal for the team in regulation to tie the game. In overtime, Lennin Martinez scored the game winning goal. Holden Kue was impressive in the goal allowing only three goals and managing one shutout. The team is coached by Scott Goforth.
